The center footing
Originally, I designed the center preformed footing at a weight of nearly 500 pounds!!That was way too much if I was planning to place it by hand, even with the help of several friends and neighbors that certainly are not willing to throw out their backs.

I had an epiphany!!

Make the footing with honeycombs that would be filled after it is placed and has the cinderblocks on it.The center hole is left open all the way through, but it too will be partially filled. This center hole will hold the post up in the middle during the building process and provide additional stability after construction. When it is complete, with cinderblocks, additional re-bar, threadded rod and cement filling it will weigh close to 1500 pounds.

The honeycomb design will also lighten the cement footing by over 200 pounds. This will make it light enough for me and a couple of guys to place it by hand.

It is amazing to think about the structures built before the last century. It took a lot of muscle power to move large rocks and beams. A horse and a block and tackle sure are handy... fortunately, the Explorer has a lot of horse power and a tow package.I also have a light block and tackle that should be able to handle what I throw at it... maybe.

The boxes are mounted with wire that is pulled through the plywood base.I twisted the wires on the first box, but later realized only bending the was needed... and much easier.

We poured 5 1/2 80 pound bags that evening. It was hard work!!The boys helped A LOT in every way they could. You can see them here pulling the cement out of the mixing box with their gloved hands.

When all was said and done, the large footing it quite manageable for one person to move about. I can easily lift it one side at a time at a dry weight of under 320 pounds.

Friday, I go and install them.We are ALL super excited!
