Our first full day in Paris, we tackled the Monster museum! |

After a restful day and a good nights sleep, we thought we could tackle The Louvre museum. From our neighborhood in Montmartre we took bus 80 which dropped us off at Champs Elysees and Franklin D Roosevelt. This is right near the Grand Palais National Museum and takes you through the Tuileries gardens in front of the Palais Royal Musee du Louvre.
I wanted to give the family a first view of the Arc de Triumph and a grand walk up to the Louvre to get a true sense of the size of it all. Being from a small island town in South Texas, this is a grand site!
On the way, near the entrance to the Tuileries gardens, the 3000 year old Obelisque, a gift from Egypt is impressive to see. It is amazing how 'new' it still looks.
We approached the Louvre and entered the Pyramid about 9:30 am. The line to get in seemed long, but we were through the security check in just a few minutes.
As you enter the lower floor under the Pyramid, there is a large information booth just under the entry that has a map and general guide for the museum in a lot of languages. They seem to cater very well to all nationalities. Be sure to get your map right away.
The automated ticket machines have a choice of languages, too. Purchasing tickets was very fast despite the lines with hundreds of people in them. In the time Jennifer found the restrooms, we had bought our tickets and gone through the gift shop.
We brought our family radios to keep coordinated when we separated like that. Those radios are a great thing to bring any time you travel.
After getting our bearings, we tried to enter the wrong place and were sent back in rapid French. I know a little French, but it was too fast for me, however, when a guy wearing a gun waves and points you go where he tells you.
After a little planning meeting, we had a route mapped out and were on our way.
The first thing I wanted to see was the walls and foundation of the original Palais Louvre. This was a defensive fortress built at the end of the 12th century by Philip August. He is the one who built the wall that we will see near the Pantheon in a few days. This palace, even just the footings and lower walls is very impressive. Don't miss the model near the entrance to this room. Also, there are nice restrooms just before you go in.
This palace consisted of ten towers and at its center there was a tower that was 15 meters in diameter and more than 30 meters high. That is around 100 feet! HUGH!!
