Back

Today we rented a car for a week, we discovered that it is more economical to rent a car then to buy train tickets to all the location that we want to go. There is an enterprise office just two stops up on the U-bahn and they had a great rate on a small car for 4. Our car has snow tires which is great since we are heading to Austria and Switzerland, it seems that you can take the car in towns along the border with no problem. We also have and on board Navigation System that we have named Hyacinth. Any one who has seen the British comedy keeping up appearances will understand why we named her that. It seems she is bossy and always telling guys what to do. In reality this system is fantastic we were unsure in the beginning that we actually wanted it but now we are so grateful that we did. It is fantastic. David did his first time on the autobahn today and handled it very well. The roads are flat straight and well maintained so it really is a different experience than driving in the states. The left lane is definitely for the fast cars. David topped out at around 210 kph which is 130 mph and there were card flying by us. We usually stayed around 180 kph which is 110 and stayed with the flow of traffic pretty good. But like the book says if you are in the left land and someone comes up behind you flashing tier lights, get out of the way prompt, they are not kidding.

Today we decided to meander around the country side through several of the little towns on our way to Inglestadt. We wanted to see some typical country villages and homesteads. We stopped at a Monastery and we were able to go into the church and listen to one of the monks practicing on the organ. We ended up  in the Central city of Ingelstadt, that is surrounded by fortified walls like so many of the of the old cities in Germany are. We walked through part of the town square and ended up stopping in this beer hall called Herrnbrau, we were early about 6:45 and it was lucky we were because we did not have a reservations and luckily there was not a party arriving till 8:30 so they were kind and gave us a table. David and I had a Beer, I tried the Weizenbier and David had a Dark Beer. They were both very good. I must admit I liked the lighter beer better. For dinner we all shared off of each plates, we had wiener schnitzel with roasted potatoes, A dumpling in mushroom sauce, a variety of breads and cheese with cold cured meats and grilled hot meats (beef, pork, etc.) with French fries, green beans wrapped in bacon and grilled  and hot pork ribs. It was enough food for probably 6-10 people but we worked our way through it. We finished the meal with a taste of mulled wine and waddled out the door.It was a hearty meal and absolutely fantastic.
