It is official.. there is a hole!!
Well, we have finally broken ground on the earth shelter house.  The hole grows every time I go out there to dig.

Ultimately, we are digging into the side of the hill and area that is 62 feet deep and 88 feet wide.  About 1/3 of that is actually lower than we are digging.  We will be leveling the whole area.

Once leveled, we will be digging footings.

Here you can see both Val and I working on moving earth on the first day of digging, Sunday, October 12, 2008.  That is the first two images.

The last pictures seen on this page are from October 16, 2008.  The day we blew a hydraulic hose on the back hoe.

The two with Val standing in a hole is for reference.  In both images Val is standing in the same place.  He is standing at the approximate height of the floor where the boys bathroom will be.

The next image is the pile of dirt we have moved so far... it is big and we have only just got started!

One more image shows both boys in the hole. Val in the background is standing in about the same place as he is in the previous images.  This is after a few days of help from Tim and Dan Bailey, my nephew and brother from Des Moines.  They both helped to operate the backhoe that dug the hole and the front end loader that moved the earth.
