Forty Yards of Cement will start arriving Wednesday morning |
We have spent several days preparing for the big pour of 40 yards of cement for the footings of the Earth Shelter House walls, the post footings and a much smaller footing for a decorative wall that will be built along the front of the property.
Since it is just footings, we have decided not to employ a cement team to finish this project. I have worked with a little cement and feel confident in my abilities. (When it comes to the slab for the house, it will definitely be a different story.)
Two neighbors have agreed to come over and help move and settle the cement in to place. Everything gets off the ground at about 7:00 AM Wednesday! WOOHOO!!
Excavating the house was a big step, but these footings will be one of the first big things that will make the project visible as we look out over the area.
DETAILS:
We are pouring 315 linear feet of footings that will be 12 inches deep and 2-3 feet wide. This is a little wider than has been directed to us but the trenches that the footing will be poured in are about 2 feet wide in the bottom. It averages out.
We have installed three strands of 5/8 inch re-bar in 20 foot sections all the way around and tied them all together and in place. Additionally, we have small rocks under the re-bar every 3 to 5 feet to hold it up off the plastic and set into the footings better.
Because we are pouring the cement in nearly all tranches, there is no guide along the edges to determine the depth of the cement. Because of this, I have pounded form stakes every 6 to ten feet with a nail marking the height. All stakes were set using the laser level so they are within 1/8 inch of being accurate.
A la Rob Roy we are going to put a row of cinder block on top of the footing that will be used as the form for pour the slab later.
We have plastic cut for the post footings, 29 of them. We will pour as much and as many of these post footings as we can until the cement runs out.
Now, the only thing left is a little detail work that could easily be done in short order but I will be spreading it out over today and tomorrow with the boys help. Eureka Springs Events David Place Building Arkansas Earth Shelter House Date taken: 2010 07 12 12:16 Monday Important Links:
