Scientific name: Macroclemys temminckii (Temminki's large turtle)

Normally growing up to 26 inches, the Alligator Snapping Turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in the world. Adults can attain weights of over 250 pounds. Alligator Snapping Turtles gain about one pound per year. This means a 250-pound turtle would be 250 years old.

This large male turtle is 122 pounds. According to Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation biologists, you can estimate that this turtle hatched some time in the 1880s!

Deep Breathing

This large Aligator turtle has been witnessed by Aquarium staff and volunteers sleeping on the bottom for almost 3 hours on a single breath of air! Alligator Snapping turtules are completely aquatic, coming out of the water only to lay eggs or move to another body of water.

Snapping Turtle Bites

Snapping Turtles have strong jaws capable of taking off fingers. Don't worry, snapping turtles do not try to bite people, they only bite if provoked. In the wild it is strictly look, but don't touch!
