In the back of the Fishes of Oklahoma exhibit, you will find the Hayes Family Ozark Stream, an exhibit of beavers, raccoons and otters. These mammals offer an entertaining time of feeding for everyone to enjoy. Check the schedule before you start your visit to the Oklahoma Aquarium to catch it.

We showed up a few minutes early and the room filled fast. Pick which critter you would like to see well, you can get in the front of the crowd on one, but if the Aquarium is at all crowded, possibly not both. Normally, our family chooses 'off days' to do this sort of thing but Spring Break was in full swing and a lot of people could be seen.

Beavers and otters are the only ones fed the day we were visiting. The otter proved to be it's normal playful self and stole the show, of course, but the beaver enclosure is one of the best designed that I have visited. You feel like you are sitting on the edge of a boat just a few feet from the shore. In the water around you the beavers swim from one side to the other to their well simulated beaver lodges. They are fed at the waters edge. This pair made an irresistable couple.

The raccoons are behind glass, thankfully. They are a cleaver nocturnal mammal. They always den within 100 yards of a permanent water source because they wash all their food before eating it.

Raccoons are one of the few native mammals whose habitat has not been restricted by urban development. Raccoons have adapted to man's environment.

Attics and chimneys become dens and rest stops, sewers become subways and pet food left out relaces the dietary staples. This can create the potential for encounters between raccoons and people, and can be problematic.
